Andrew M. Ostrognai, resident in our Hong Kong office, is a corporate partner and Chair of the firm’s private equity practice in Asia. He is also a member of the firm’s Private Equity Group focusing on private equity fund formation and downstream investment in the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Ostrognai has extensive experience in forming all types of funds, from large pan-Asian buy-out funds to smaller focused sector or country-specific funds, as well as separate account programs and foreign-sponsored, RMB-denominated private equity funds.
Mr. Ostrognai was named to Private Equity International’s first-ever “Legal Power 30” – a list of the 30 most influential private equity lawyers globally, and remains on the most current version of the list.
Mr. Ostrognai leads a team which Chambers Global (2012) says, "is regarded as the gold standard regarding fund formation” in Asia. In Chambers Asia Pacific (2014) sources describe him as “a top-notch lawyer who is very responsive and supportive to clients,” and “an undisputed leader and very well known in the market.” Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2010) says Debevoise is the “team to beat in the Hong Kong market.” The International Financial Law Review 1000 (2014) reports that “the Hong Kong team is busy even in a somewhat difficult fundraising environment. The client list is stellar.” The International Financial Law Review 1000 (2011) reports a fund manager as saying “The quality of their advice and the chemistry between our teams is first-rate.” Similarly, the International Financial Law Review 1000 (2010) reports that “A rival says: ‘They are the best in Asia.’ Another client agrees: ‘Hands-down, Debevoise has the premier fund establishment practice here. Their work ethic is incredible and they are a pleasure to work with, even during stressful times on difficult issues.” The firm has been consistently voted a top law firm for fund formation in Asia in readers polls conducted by Private Equity International and has been named “International Investment Funds Team of the Year” at The Chambers China Awards (2012).
According to Private Equity International, Mr. Ostrognai, “has guided clients through many of Asia Pacific’s most demanding fund formation challenges.” Chambers Asia (2009) recognizes him as an “internationally acclaimed fund specialist,” and sources note his “ability to understand the intricacies of the local market and the demands of global investors.” Chambers Asia-Pacific (2012) describes Mr. Ostrognai as "highly sought after and recommended as 'one of the best lawyers in town – he has incredible knowledge and is somebody you can really trust to provide accurate advice. He is also a real pro who is tireless in his efforts to find solutions.'" Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2009/2010) noted that Mr. Ostrognai is “number one for China private equity fund formation.”
He serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association, and is a regular guest lecturer to INSEAD’s MBA students on private equity fund formation issues. Mr. Ostrognai is ranked in the top band by Chambers Asia-Pacific (2013). He is also ranked as a leading individual in investment funds in Hong Kong by Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2014) and is recognized as a “leading lawyer” for fund formation in the International Financial Law Review 1000 (2014). Mr. Ostrognai is also listed in the International Who’s Who of Private Funds Lawyers published by Law Business Research, the Euromoney’s Expert Guide to the World’s Leading Private Equity Lawyers, and PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook.
Mr. Ostrognai received his B.A. in 1986 from Yale University and his J.D. in 1989 from the University of Chicago Law School.
