Experience
Andrew M. Ostrognai, resident in our Hong Kong office, is a corporate partner and Chair of the firm’s private equity practice in Asia. He is also a member of the firm’s Private Equity Group focusing on private equity fund formation and downstream investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mr. Ostrognai leads what Chambers Global (2007) has called the “pre-eminent fund formation practice” in Hong Kong. Chambers Global (2012) reports sources as saying “Debevoise is regarded as the gold standard regarding fund formation” in Asia. Similarly, the International Financial Law Review 1000 (2010) reports that “A rival says: ‘They are the best in Asia.’ Another client agrees: ‘Hands-down, Debevoise has the premier fund establishment practice here.’” The Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2009/2010) also reports that “they are the team to beat in the Hong Kong market.” The International Financial Law Review 1000 (2011) reports a fund manager as saying "The quality of their advice and the chemistry between our teams is first-rate. Their work ethic is incredible and they are a pleasure to work with, even during stressful times on difficult issues." Mr. Ostrognai has extensive experience in forming all types of funds, from large pan-Asian buy-out funds to smaller focused sector or country-specific funds, as well as managed account programs and foreign-sponsored, RMB-denominated private equity funds.
Mr. Ostrognai is recognized by Private Equity International as one of the 30 most influential lawyers in global private equity. He serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association, and is a regular guest lecturer to INSEAD’s MBA students on private equity fund formation issues. Mr. Ostrognai is also ranked in the top band by Chambers Asia-Pacific (2012) for private equity fund formation and recognized as a “leading lawyer” for fund formation in the International Financial Law Review 1000 (2011) and as a "leading individual" for investment funds and private equity in Hong Kong by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2010/2011). He is also listed in the International Who’s Who of Private Funds Lawyers published by Law Business Research, the Euromoney’s Expert Guide to the World’s Leading Private Equity Lawyers, and PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook.
Mr. Ostrognai received his B.A. in 1986 from Yale University and his J.D. in 1989 from the University of Chicago Law School.
