Experience
Jennifer Burleigh is a corporate partner and member of the firm’s Private Equity and Investment Management Groups. Her practice focuses principally on advising sponsors in the formation of a broad array of private investment funds, including leveraged buyout, international private equity, energy/infrastructure, mezzanine and distressed debt and equity funds. Ms. Burleigh’s private fund clients include EIG Global Energy Partners, Gávea Investimentos, Odyssey Investment Partners, Trust Company of the West and Vinci Partners.
Ms. Burleigh also advises clients in connection with strategic investments in private investment firms, asset manager spin-outs and the establishment of new investment firms. Most recently, she advised on the establishment of private fund sponsor Tenex Capital Partners, and advised American International Group in the sale of its investment advisory and asset management business to Pacific Century Group. She has also counseled clients in the creation of listed “permanent capital” vehicles and advised sophisticated financial institutions in the establishment of employee investment programs.
Ms. Burleigh speaks and writes regularly on topics in the private equity industry, and is recognized as a leading practitioner in private equity fund formation by Chambers Global (2012) and Chambers USA (2012), where sources say she “deserves to be mentioned with a superlative.” She is also recommended by IFLR1000 (2012), PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook (2010) and The Legal 500 US (2012), where clients say she has “great command of issues, market sentiment and commercial awareness.” She is a member of the Private Investment Funds Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
Ms. Burleigh joined Debevoise in 1994 and became a partner in 2002. Ms. Burleigh received her B.A. with honors from Stanford University in 1989, and her J.D. in 1994 from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a Managing Editor of the Columbia Law Review.
