Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is pleased to announce that partner Mark P. Goodman, who is Co-Chair of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group, a member of the firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Defense Group and a member of the firm’s Management Committee, has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in North America. Founded in 1950, the College is composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only, and only after careful investigation, to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality. Membership in the College cannot exceed 1% of the total lawyer population of any state or province. There are currently approximately 5,860 members in the United States and Canada, including active Fellows, Emeritus Fellows, Judicial Fellows and Honorary Fellows. The College strives to improve and elevate the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the trial profession. Qualified lawyers are called to Fellowship in the College from all branches of trial practice. They are carefully selected from among those who customarily represent plaintiffs in civil cases and those who customarily represent defendants, those who prosecute individuals accused of crime and those who defend them. The College is thus able to speak with a balanced voice on important issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.

Mr. Goodman graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1983 and from the New York University School of Law in 1987, where he served as a Senior Editor of the Law Review. Prior to joining Debevoise, Mr. Goodman served as a law clerk to the Hon. Leonard I. Garth, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr. Goodman became an associate at Debevoise in 1988 and left the firm from 1992 to 1995 to serve as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (Criminal Division). As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Goodman participated in and supervised numerous investigations and prosecutions involving, among other crimes, securities fraud, bank fraud, mail and wire fraud, and money laundering and was the lead prosecutor at 10 trials to verdict. Mr. Goodman returned to the firm in 1996 and became a partner in 1997. Since returning to the firm, Mr. Goodman has been lead counsel at multiple trials and arbitrations. He is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the American Bar Association. He currently serves on the boards of the Legal Aid Society and Sarah Lawrence College, and on the Board of Advisors to the NYU School of Law Center on Civil Justice.
