Four Debevoise Bar Leaders Profiled in the New York Law Journal

23 September 2016

Four Debevoise & Plimpton LLP lawyers were recently profiled in a New York Law Journal article regarding their leadership roles in prominent bar organizations.

Partners Donald Francis Donovan, John S. Kiernan and David W. Rivkin, as well as Deborah Enix-Ross, Senior Advisor to the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Group, all currently serve in senior positions in some of the most prominent legal organizations in the profession.

Mr. Donovan is President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). Since its founding nearly 60 years ago, ICCA promotes the use of arbitration, conciliation and other forms of resolving international commercial and investor-state disputes. Accredited as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations, ICCA convenes international arbitration congresses and conferences, publishes authoritative international arbitration publications and promotes the harmonization of arbitration and conciliation rules, laws, procedures and standards around the world. Mr. Donovan teaches international arbitration and international investment law and arbitration at NYU School of Law.

Mr. Kiernan is President of the New York City Bar Association. At the City Bar, he previously served on the Executive Committee and chaired several committees, and was on the Board of Directors of the City Bar Fund. Mr. Kiernan is a member of the Chief Judge’s Committee on Non-Lawyers and the Justice Gap, and is the Board Chair of Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York and Chair of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR). He is the former chair of the boards of Legal Services New York City, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, Volunteers of Legal Service and the Justice Resource Center. He was the Mayor of Pelham Manor, NY, from 1999-2001 and is currently an Adjunct Professor at New York University School of Law.

Mr. Rivkin serves as the President of the International Bar Association (IBA). The IBA was formed in 1947, and is comprised of over 100,000 individual members as well as over 200 bar association and law societies. He is the first American lawyer to hold the position of President since 1990. During his presidency, Mr. Rivkin has focused on judicial integrity, climate change justice and human rights, human trafficking, and the independence of the legal profession.

Ms. Enix-Ross is Chair of the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates. The position is the second-highest office within the ABA, one of the world’s largest voluntary professional organizations, with nearly 400,000 members and more than 3,500 entities. The House of Delegates is the policy-making body of the ABA and is comprised of more than 580 members, including representatives of state and local bar associations, substantive legal sections and divisions of the ABA, and affiliated organizations and conferences of the Judicial Division, as well as former ABA officers, members of the Board of Governors, at-large delegates and state delegates.
