Leading Disputes Partner Joins Debevoise in London

21 February 2017

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced that leading arbitration and public international law practitioner Wendy J. Miles, QC will join the firm as a partner in its London office in early March. She will become part of the firm’s global International Dispute Resolution Group.

Recognised as one of the market’s foremost lawyers in the fields of arbitration and public international law, Ms. Miles’ twenty-plus years of experience have seen her conduct arbitrations under all the major institutions, as well as ad hoc arbitrations and significant public international law matters. In that time, she has advised a wide range of multi-nationals, sovereign states and state entities.

Ms. Miles is a Vice President of the ICC Court of Arbitration, and remains a representative on various professional bodies, including the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, where she co-chaired the Task Force on Costs in Arbitration. She is also Vice Chair of the IBA Arbitration Committee.

Ms. Miles regularly teaches on arbitration and public international law related issues, including as a founding member of the Executive Committee for the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy.

Ms. Miles is admitted to practice in England & Wales, and New Zealand. As a QC, Ms. Miles is also able to act as advocate at all levels of the UK courts. With Lord Goldsmith QC also in Debevoise’s London office, the firm acts for clients in every aspect of litigation and arbitration.

The hire follows a period of significant organic growth in Debevoise’s International Disputes Group in London. Patrick Taylor was promoted to partner in 2016. Earlier this year, Mr. Taylor, London international counsel Aimee-Jane Lee, and London associate Samantha J. Rowe were named to Who’s Who Legal’s list of future leaders in arbitration, as were New York partners Catherine Amirfar, Ina Popova and Natalie L. Reid, and New York associate Floriane Lavaud. Ms. Amirfar recently returned to the firm following a two-year stint as the Counselor on International Law to the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State.

Including Ms. Miles, the firm’s International Disputes Group has 14 partners and five counsel/international counsel worldwide.

Michael W. Blair, Presiding Partner at Debevoise, comments: “Our international disputes practice is one of the jewels in the Debevoise crown. It has an extraordinary win record, and our lawyers hold leadership roles with virtually every major arbitration body in the world. It is also an incredibly competitive area of the law, and so we are keen not to rest on our laurels. Bringing in Wendy means we are strengthening a strength. She is a hugely respected practitioner in this market, and will fit neatly into a London team that has grown into one of the strongest in the UK.”

David W. Rivkin, immediate past president of the International Bar Association and co-Chair of Debevoise’s International Disputes Group, comments: “We are delighted that Wendy is joining us. She has long been a leader in the arbitration and public international law communities, and is among the elite band of lawyers who focus on these areas. Her wide ranging experience, as well as her senior positions in the ICC and IBA, are testament to her talent and her drive.”

Donald Francis Donovan, current president of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration and co-Chair of Debevoise’s International Disputes Group, comments: “For a disputes practice to be successful, it needs strength across geographies and across generations. That is something we have placed a premium on in recent years. Bringing Wendy into the team is the next step in that strategy. She is a gifted lawyer with impressive international experience, and is at the forefront of the current generation of leaders in her practice areas. We are lucky to have her.”

Lord Goldsmith QC, London Co-Managing Partner and Chair of European and Asian Litigation at Debevoise, adds: “We have built a very strong team in London both for arbitration and court work. Wendy will be an excellent addition. We all look forward to working with her.”

Wendy J. Miles comments: “This is an exciting move. Debevoise has an impressive team and has been involved in market shaping arbitrations and public international law work in recent years. Its global platform and commitment to providing advocacy in the UK fit well with my own practice and recent experience. I am looking forward to joining up with the team and playing my part in its continued growth.”
