Legal Support Services
Overview

With one of the strongest and most diverse legal practices in the country, the firm heavily relies upon the professional legal assistant, litigation support and analyst support staff, collectively known as Legal Support Services. This department supports the firm’s corporate, litigation, tax and estate planning practice groups. Our program consists of both entry-level and career track positions. As part of an international firm, Legal Support Services staff often have the opportunity to work with international colleagues. Domestic and foreign travel is often required to support the firm’s practice groups and client needs.

The firm provides formal training to incoming Legal Support Services staff. Senior members of the department participate in some of the training opportunities conducted for attorneys.

In the U.S. offices, legal assistant and analyst performance is reviewed in the spring, with salary adjustments effective in July. Legal assistants and analysts also participate in a year-end bonus program intended to reward exceptional performance.

Corporate Legal Assistants

Opportunities for legal assistants exist in every area of the corporate practice, including finance, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcy, securities, real estate and intellectual property. Junior corporate legal assistants are assigned a legal assistant advisor to help them navigate through their first assignments at the firm. Senior corporate legal assistants have opportunities to specialize within a certain practice area and are relied upon by legal teams for more advanced work as befits their experience level.

Litigation Legal Assistants

In addition to working on large-scale commercial cases, litigation legal assistants have opportunities to work on a broad range of complex matters including internal investigations, international arbitrations, and white-collar criminal defense matters. Many of the firm’s litigation legal assistants are experienced case managers who help manage the discovery process and oversee large teams of support personnel. Litigation legal assistants and case managers are extensively trained in the use of the firm’s litigation support technology.

Discovery & Data Management (Litigation Support)

Members of Discovery & Data Management are project managers and technologists who understand both the litigation process and the application of technology to meet case needs. The group consults with legal teams, clients and vendors to ensure the best technology and workflow are utilized to meet the client objective.

Members of this group are encouraged to engage directly with legal teams to best understand their needs. They are also expected to stay current with emerging legal technologies and to stay current with national and international e-discovery market trends.

Discovery & Data Management staff responsibilities include preparing e-discovery estimates; evaluating vendors for service best suited to the needs of a case; developing, enacting and monitoring technical workflows; providing war room and onsite support for trials and hearings; and responding to training requests from legal teams.

Litigation Analysts

The firm has a team of Litigation Analysts to assist associates, counsel and partners with factual research and analysis, privilege logs, witness preparation, presentation graphics and document review. Analysts often become embedded with attorneys and legal assistants on specific matters and become a crucial member of the client team throughout the life of the case. The factual knowledge gained during ediscovery is an asset to the lawyers through deposition preparation and development of materials used during hearings and trials. Analysts travel with teams to assist with all aspects of complex commercial litigation, arbitrations and investigations at client sites as necessary.
