David W. Rivkin Named Secretary-General of the International Bar Association
November 15, 2010

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is pleased to announce that David W. Rivkin, Co-Chair of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Group, has been elected the Secretary-General of the International Bar Association (IBA) for the 2011/2012 term. The election was held at the IBA’s Annual Conference last month in Vancouver. Mr. Rivkin will assume office as Secretary-General in January 2011.

The International Bar Association, established in 1947, is the world’s leading organization of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. Its membership includes over 40,000 lawyers and almost 200 bar associations and law societies spanning every continent. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. The Secretary-General is the third highest ranking officer within the IBA. Once Mr. Rivkin takes the position, not one of the top three positions in the IBA will have been held by an American for more than two decades.

Mr. Rivkin will continue his active practice while serving as Secretary-General. A litigation partner in Debevoise’s New York and London offices, he is regarded as one of the leaders in the fields of international litigation and arbitration. For example, he is ranked as one of the top seven international arbitration practitioners worldwide in Chambers Global (2010) and as a leading American in international arbitration in numerous other publications around the world. Mr. Rivkin has represented clients in international arbitrations throughout the world regarding long-term energy concessions, investment treaties, joint venture agreements, insurance coverage, construction contracts, distribution agreements and intellectual property, among others.

Mr. Rivkin’s current major matters include representing Occidental Petroleum against Ecuador in a $3 billion claim arising from that country’s expropriation of Occidental in 2006; enforcing a judgment he won of more than $750 million against Argentina for an investment owned by Kenneth Dart; and acting for ExxonMobil in a NAFTA arbitration against Canada. Earlier this year, he won a $750 million arbitration award for Hyundai Heavy Industries against a Middle Eastern company, which is believed to be the largest award ever by an Arbitration Tribunal acting under the Rules of the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration.

Mr. Rivkin is also active in many other professional organizations. Among others, he is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute; serves in leadership roles for several major international arbitration institutions; and is a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law and a member of the Sanctions Subcommittee of the Department of State’s Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy (ACIEP). He has served as one of the Court of Arbitration for Sport arbitrators at the Olympics in 2002, 2004 and 2008.

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is a leading international law firm, representing a wide range of clients around the world. Founded in 1931, the firm has offices in New York, Washington, D.C., London, Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The firm has approximately 750 lawyers.
