Debevoise Receives 2006 ABA Pro Bono Publico Award
June 5, 2006

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP has been named a recipient of the 2006 Pro Bono Publico Award by the American Bar Association. Debevoise was among five lawyers and law firms selected "for extraordinary contributions of legal services to those who cannot afford representation." ABA President Michael S. Greco and the Standing Committee on Pro Bono Public Service will present the awards at the Pro Bono Publico Awards Assembly Luncheon at the ABA’s annual meeting in August.

The ABA cited Debevoise as a "great example of setting the standard for pro bono" and noted that the firm "has always taken on important and complex pro bono litigations." In recent pro bono projects, Debevoise lawyers have advocated on behalf of clients seeking to defend international and domestic civil rights, prisoners’ rights, voters’ rights, labor and employment rights, the rights of individuals with mental illness, and on behalf of refugees seeking asylum in the United States. The firm also provides substantial pro bono assistance in transactional, tax and privacy matters. In March 2005, Debevoise argued the United States Supreme Court appeal of a Mexican national who was sentenced to death by a Texas state court.

Martin Frederic Evans, the presiding partner of Debevoise & Plimpton, said "We are honored to be among those recognized by the ABA and its Standing Committee on Pro Bono Public Service for delivering legal services to those in need. Providing the highest quality pro bono assistance to those who could not otherwise afford representation is part of our firm’s history and culture, and we will continue to support pro bono involvement as a core value of our firm."
