John M. Vasily Named a Dealmaker of the Year by The American Lawyer
April 4, 2011
Debevoise & Plimpton LLP partner John M. Vasily has been named a Dealmaker of the Year by The American Lawyer magazine for his role in advising American International Group, Inc. (AIG) and AIA Group Limited (AIA) in AIG's disposition of AIA, culminating in AIA’s initial public offering and listing on the Main Board of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited.
The American Lawyer’s Dealmakers of the Year, featuring the year’s top transactional lawyers, appears in the April 2011 issue. The feature on Mr. Vasily highlights the firm’s role as a primary outside counsel to AIG as the insurance giant worked to dispose of assets worldwide and repay the U.S. government following its bailout. The American Lawyer noted that the AIA IPO, completed in October 2010, and led by Mr. Vasily “raised $21.5 billion, a record amount for the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.” The AIA disposition was conducted as a dual track process, with the IPO following a terminated deal for Prudential PLC to acquire AIA earlier in 2010, in what would have been the largest insurance company acquisition in history.
Andrew Borodach, AIG's associate general counsel who worked with Mr. Vasily, commented in the article that “[Vasily] understood our needs from commercial and legal perspectives, but he also understood that this was a very large, high-profile transaction with individual constituencies and unique internal dynamics.” Mr. Vasily is co-chair of Debevoise's Worldwide Financial Institutions Group, and is recognized by Chambers USA, IFLR Expert Guides, and The Legal 500 US as a leading lawyer for mergers and acquisitions, especially for cross-border transactions in the financial services sector. He became a partner of Debevoise & Plimpton in 1991.
The Debevoise IPO team was led by Mr. Vasily in New York, and resident partner E. Drew Dutton in Hong Kong, and included partners Kenneth J. Berman, Thomas M. Britt, Peter J. Loughran, Seth L. Rosen, and associates Vivian M. Blanco, Mathias J. Iranzo, Henry Han Xi Lau, John C. Lynch, Brian F. McKenna, Haifeng Peng, Y. Rupa Rao and Molly F. Stockley.
Debevoise’s mergers and acquisitions lawyers consistently lead transactions for many of the world’s most prominent corporations, financial services institutions and private equity firms. The group has particularly strong experience with complicate cross-border transactions and complex leveraged acquisitions across a wide range of industries. In 2010, Debevoise worked on more than 100 announced or completed M&A deals with a total transaction value in excess of $177 billion.
