Debevoise Lawyer Honored by Sanctuary for Families with Abely Award
September 23, 2009

Hannah M. Pennington, an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton, was presented with an Abely Award by Sanctuary for Families, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Columbia Law School for her work assisting victims of domestic violence.

Over the past 10 years, Ms. Pennington, an associate in Debevoise’s Litigation Department, has represented more than a dozen clients, founded and served as a co-chair for Sanctuary’s Associates Committee, supervised pro bono attorneys from Debevoise in their work for Sanctuary and founded Rutgers Law School’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Project.

The Abely Awards were presented on September 21 by The Honorable Judith S. Kaye, former Chief Judge of the State of New York; Dorchen A. Leidholdt, of Sanctuary for Families’ Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services; and Ellen P. Chapnick, of Columbia Law School.

For the past 13 years, the Abely Awards have recognized individuals dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence.  Sanctuary for Families is the largest not-for-profit agency in New York state dedicated exclusively to serving domestic violence victims and their children.  It provides shelter, counseling, legal advice and representation, economic development assistance and a special program for children who have witnessed domestic violence.
