Debevoise & Plimpton Lawyers Address the IBA’s 2011 Annual Conference

From October 30th to November 4th, 2011, the International Bar Association (IBA) hosted its Annual Conference in Dubai, which included the participation of several Debevoise lawyers, many of whom hold notable leadership roles in the IBA. The conference was attended by more than 5,000 lawyers from 129 jurisdictions.
Partner Catherine M. Amirfar spoke at two sessions: the first discussed the benefits and challenges of outsourcing of legal services from the law firm and client perspective, and the second explored disputes in complex international energy and infrastructure projects.
Debevoise partner and Co-Chair of the IBA Arbitration Committee, Mark W. Friedman, organized the eight sessions the committee sponsored and spoke at the committee’s inaugural outreach to judges program, which involved a dialogue with judges on arbitration law. Mr. Friedman also gave a speech at the Arbitration Committee dinner thanking his outgoing Co-Chair, Judith Gill QC, for her years of service to the committee.
Nicholas F. Potter, partner and Co-Chair of the firm’s Financial Institutions Group, spoke at a session that looked at the developing international regimes aimed at identifying and monitoring systemically important institutions and systemic risk in the financial system.
David W. Rivkin, Co-Chair of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Group and Secretary-General of the IBA, spoke at a session that explored the art of persuasion, focusing on practices and techniques that lawyers can apply in practice to steer the decision-making process.
Partner and an officer of the IBA Investment Funds Committee, Rebecca F. Silberstein, co-chaired a session that shared recent case studies of bespoke structuring of funds, including co-investment funds, managed accounts and acquisitions and financing structures. Ms. Silberstein also spoke at the IBA Investment Funds Committee dinner about the U.S. private equity industry.
Christopher K. Tahbaz, Co-Chair of the firm's Asian Litigation practice and Vice Chair of the IBA Litigation Committee, co-chaired a session that discussed the latest developments in specialized courts designed to improve the quality and efficiency of commercial dispute resolution in a number of jurisdictions around the world.
Deborah Enix-Ross, Debevoise Litigation Practice Group Manager and a Council Member of the IBA as the representative of the American Bar Association, co-chaired a session on issues related to rules and regulations of bar associations.
