Pro Bono
The firm is ranked first in The American Lawyer's most recent survey of pro bono contributions made by New York-based firms.  This ranking reflects the deep commitment to public service found at Debevoise.  Work on behalf of pro bono clients involves all areas of our practice, and we encourage associates to participate in pro bono activities whether or not the work falls within their particular practice areas.

Pro bono work assignments are routinely available to all summer associates.  Those with the firm for a substantial portion of the summer are also encouraged to participate in firm-sponsored one- to two-week pro bono externships at any one of a number of legal services organizations.  Associates interested in working on pro bono matters are strongly urged to attend training programs offered by outside organizations, including inMotion, Inc., Sanctuary for Families, The Legal Aid Society, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Inc. and Human Rights First.

Recent pro bono projects have focused on international human rights, civil rights, the rights of the homeless, the treatment of mentally ill prisoners, women's reproductive rights, death row cases, voting rights, discrimination claims, housing cases, and immigration and political asylum cases.  We also provide legal services to "micro-entrepreneurs" starting small businesses in blighted neighborhoods, community development organizations, and many arts organizations, including The American Ballet Theatre, Poets House, Symphony Space, and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
