Overview
Professional legal assistants and analysts work in the firm's corporate, litigation, tax and estate planning practice groups. Our program consists of both entry-level and career track positions. Legal assistants must have undergraduate degrees and analysts must have law degrees.
In New York and Washington, legal assistants and analysts work in the firm's Legal Support Services group. In addition to formal training programs offered by the firm, legal assistants and analysts in this group participate in some of the training opportunities conducted for associates.
In the U.S. offices, legal assistant and analyst performance is reviewed in the spring, with salary adjustments effective in July. Legal assistants and analysts also participate in a year-end bonus program intended to reward exceptional performance.
As part of an international firm, Debevoise legal assistants and analysts often have the opportunity to work with international colleagues, and they are occasionally assigned to travel abroad on their assignments.
Corporate Legal Assistants
Opportunities for legal assistants exist in every practice area of the corporate group, including finance, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcy, securities and real estate. All legal assistants are assigned to a team within the corporate group. Junior legal assistants are also assigned a legal assistant advisor to help them navigate through their first assignments at the firm.
Litigation Legal Assistants
In addition to working on large-scale commercial cases, litigation legal assistants have opportunities to work on a broad range of complex matters including internal investigations, international arbitrations, and white-collar criminal defense matters. Many of the firm’s litigation legal assistants are experienced case managers who help manage the discovery process and oversee large teams of support personnel. Litigation legal assistants and case managers are extensively trained in the use of the firm’s litigation support technology.
Analysts
The firm also has a large team of in-house analysts to assist lawyers, within our litigation practice group, with document review and factual analysis. All of the analysts are law school graduates.
Requirements for Consideration
Candidates for legal assistant and analyst positions must have college degrees. Analysts must also be law school graduates. Candidates should have superior college and/or law school records along with strong personal, professional, and academic references.
All candidates for legal assistant or analyst positions must be willing to make a two-year commitment to the firm.
In general, we look for candidates who have strong career interests in the legal field, either as long-term legal assistants, analysts or as future attorneys. As an international firm, we are very interested in candidates who have fluency in foreign languages.
