1. How do I apply for a summer associate position?
Debevoise recruits on campus at about 30 law schools and job fairs. For a complete listing, please see the 2010 On-Campus Interview Schedule. If your school is not on this list, please feel free to submit a resume and transcript to our legal recruiting department at .
2. What should I bring to my interview?
Please bring copies of your resume and transcript to the interview. Writing samples and references are not required.
3. How long will the interview last?
Your interview at Debevoise will last half a day. During that time, you will meet with three partners or senior-level associates, which will be followed either by lunch or afternoon coffee with two junior-level associates.
4. What expenses does the firm reimburse?
For call-back interviews, we reimburse all reasonable travel, meal and hotel expenses. Debevoise has an in-house travel department that can assist you with these arrangements.
5. After interviewing, when will I find out if I have received an offer?
We try to make offer decisions as soon as possible after receiving the interviewers' comments. Our hiring committee meets frequently to review files. You should expect to hear from us within a week of the interview.
6. Is there a minimum or maximum number of weeks for summer associates?
The minimum and maximum number of weeks is set in the Spring of each year. Historically, our minimum number of weeks has been six weeks and we expect it to remain at six weeks for the summer of 2010.
7. What is the dress code?
The year-round dress code at Debevoise is business casual. We do recommend, however, that you keep a suit in your office should you attend a client meeting or make a court appearance.
8. Do summer associates travel for work?
Students interested in working in one of our international offices during the summer are encouraged to express their interest during the recruiting process. Selection for a stint in one of the international offices is based on a lottery system, with consideration given to the needs of the other offices as well as any necessary or helpful language skills. In the past few years we have had anywhere from 9 to 19 summer associates assigned to one of our international offices.
9. Will I be able to work on pro bono matters?
Debevoise has a long-standing and widely recognized commitment to pro bono work, and we strongly encourage both summer associates and full-time lawyers to become involved in pro bono projects. Although we do not have a minimum billable hour requirement, pro bono work is valued equally alongside billable client matters. In addition to the variety of pro bono assignments that are available in-house, Debevoise also participates in a summer externship program organized by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, which allows summer associates to work for two weeks at a public interest organization at the firm's expense.
10. Will I have a mentor during the summer?
Each summer associate is assigned both a partner advisor and an associate advisor who work within the areas of the summer associate's practice interests. These contacts provide insight into different practice areas and allow you to learn more about the people who make up Debevoise. Additionally, you will have plenty of other opportunities, both formal and informal, to ask questions and to learn about the firm.
11. When are offers made?
Each summer associate is hired with the expectation that we will be able to extend an offer to him/her to return as a full-time associate. Summer associates will be informed of our decision on their last day at the firm in the summer.
12. Will I be working in one practice area or will I be rotating?
Debevoise does not have a formal rotation system for summer associate work assignments. Each week, a member of the recruiting department will contact you regarding the status of current work assignments and ask what types of assignments you would like to work on next. Because interests may change during the course of the summer, they will be able to update your interests and find work assignments in the areas you would like to explore.
13. What types of social activities are offered to summer associates?
Debevoise offers a wide range of activities over the summer. Some of these include an outing to the Central Park Zoo, Shakespeare in the Park, a cooking class and baseball games. Partners also host dinner parties throughout the summer.
14. What is the salary for summer associates in 2010?
Summer associates will be paid $3,077 weekly in 2010.
15. What if I still have questions after receiving an offer?
We invite you to return to the office to meet with additional lawyers. If you are unable to make a revisit, we would be happy to put you in touch with lawyers who will be able to answer your questions.
