Michael Compton McGregor is an associate in the Litigation Department and a member of the White Collar & Regulatory Defense Group. His practice focuses on white collar criminal investigations, internal investigations and sensitive investigations. He defends corporate and individual clients in criminal and regulatory enforcement matters.Mr. McGregor was the firm’s 2021 Fellow for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.Mr. McGregor is a member of the Subcommittee on Government Affairs of the Sports Law Committee at the New York City Bar Association. He has published articles on issues relevant to the sports industry: “What have we learned and what will stick with us: An analysis of modified sporting events during the pandemic,” Thomson Reuters (January, 2021); “Maintaining Integrity In Legalized Betting Amid Pandemic,” Law360 (July, 2020); and, “Sports, GIFs, and Copyright: Is it a Draw between Content Owners and Consumers in the Web 2.0 Era?,” 21 UCLA Ent. L. Rev. (December, 2015). He has also been a guest-lecturer on copyright preemption and right of publicity at Harvard Law School in the course, Sports and the Law: Examining the Legal History and Evolution of America’s Three “Major League” Sports: MLB, NFL and NBA.Mr. McGregor joined Debevoise in 2015. He received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2015, where he was a recipient of the Dean’s Scholar Prize in the White Collar Criminal Law and Procedure course, and the 2014 recipient of the Paul C. Weiler Student Writing Prize for his work, “The Off-Field War in Sports: Combating Ambush Marketing with a Mix of Legal and Business.” During law school, Mr. McGregor served as an intern in the legal department of the National Football League. He received a B.A. from Columbia University in 2012.Mr. McGregor is a member of the New York bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
