Paul Smith is an associate in the firm’s Hong Kong office and a member of the International Dispute Resolution Group.
For more than a decade, Mr. Smith has acted on some of the most complex, high-value and high-profile commercial and financial disputes arising out of the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. He has particular experience in disputes involving Cayman Islands structures and vehicles. Mr. Smith’s clients include private equity funds, hedge funds, investment managers, financial institutions, ultra-high net worth individuals, directors, investors and bankruptcy professionals. He provides representation in connection with major disputes, distressed funds, insolvencies, contentious security enforcements, regulatory action and other crisis events. His cases often involve cross-border elements.
Mr. Smith joined Debevoise in 2022 from a pre-eminent Cayman Islands law firm where he advised clients on range of cases, principally in relation to private equity disputes, private wealth disputes, shareholder disputes, asset recovery, and contentious insolvency and restructuring matters. He is an accomplished advocate and has frequently appeared before the courts of the jurisdictions in which he has been admitted. For example, while based in the Cayman Islands, Mr. Smith appeared as advocate in the Cayman Islands Court of Appeal and in the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.
Mr. Smith has been recommended for dispute resolution by The Legal 500. He has been described as “superb” and “thoroughly knowledgeable in the law.” According to sources, he is a “great strategic and tactical thinker” and “practical in approach.”
Mr. Smith is a Registered Foreign Lawyer with the Hong Kong Law Society, and he was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2010, as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2013 and as an Attorney-at-Law of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands in 2016.
