Anna R. Gressel is a senior associate and a member of the firm’s Data Strategy and Security Group and its FinTech and Technology practices. Her practice focuses on representing clients in regulatory investigations, supervisory examinations, and civil litigation related to artificial intelligence (“AI”) and other emerging technologies.
Ms. Gressel has a deep knowledge of regulations, supervisory expectations, and industry best practices with respect to AI governance and compliance. She regularly advises boards and senior legal executives on governance, risk, and liability issues relating to AI, privacy, and data governance. Her recent matters include assisting global financial institutions, publicly traded companies, insurers, and technology companies in establishing AI and data governance policies and procedures, advising on relevant regulatory and compliance obligations, and conducting targeted assessments of internally developed or third-party technologies.
Ms. Gressel is an active thought leader and speaker on emerging issues related to AI and data regulation and litigation, including before agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She is a member of the Artificial Intelligence Planning Sub-Committee for the 2022 Second Circuit Judicial Conference, as well as a member of the Law Committee of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems. Ms. Gressel recently created and chaired a roundtable series in collaboration with the IEEE, which focused on delivering cutting-edge information on AI regulation and risk management for general counsels and other senior legal executives. She also regularly participates in industry efforts to establish best practices in the areas of AI explainability, risk assessment, and governance.
Ms. Gressel also has broad commercial litigation experience representing clients in federal and state courts, including in securities litigation and enforcement actions, commercial disputes, and shareholder derivative suits. She is admitted to appear before the Second, Third, and Seventh Circuits and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Ms. Gressel is actively involved in the development of young lawyers, particularly women lawyers. She is a leader of the firm’s Women’s Resource Group and a member of its Diversity Committee. Ms. Gressel is also a former member of the board of directors of Ms. JD, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the success of women in law school and the legal profession, and she currently serves on the Host Committee for Ms. JD’s flagship conference, LaddHer Up.
Ms. Gressel received her J.D. from Harvard Law School and her B.A. from Pomona College, where she was awarded the senior prize in neuroscience for her thesis on protein-receptor dynamics. Prior to law school, Ms. Gressel was the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship to Morocco.
