Dr. Friedrich Popp is an international counsel in the Frankfurt office and a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. His practice focuses on arbitration, litigation, internal investigations, corporate law, data protection and anti-money laundering. In addition, he is experienced in Mergers & Acquisitions, private equity, banking and capital markets.
Dr. Popp joined the firm in 2011. Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Popp was an associate with well-known Austrian law firms in Vienna from 2004 to 2009. From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Popp was a research assistant at the Institute for Civil Procedure and the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient History of Law of the University of Vienna and a research assistant at the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law and the Austrian Society for Bank Research.
Dr. Popp is a regular author of “Wirtschaftskanzleien,” an annual Special of Börsen-Zeitung, of the Germany chapter in International Comparative Legal Guide - Corporate Investigations Laws and Regulations (January, 2024), and the Germany chapter in GIR Know-How: Privilege, published by Global Investigations Review (December, 2023). Other recent publications include “Eight GDPR Questions when Adopting Generative AI,” NYU Compliance & Enforcement (October, 2023).
Dr. Popp is a member of the Bar Associations of Vienna, Frankfurt am Main and New York.
Dr. Popp studied and received his doctorate in law at the University of Vienna and obtained an LL.M. in 2010 from the University of Virginia School of Law.
His native language is German and he is fluent in English.
Dr. Friedrich Popp ist International Counsel in unserem Frankfurter Büro und in der Praxisgruppe Litigation tätig. Dr. Popp ist auf Schiedsgerichtsverfahren, internationale Streitbeilegung, unternehmensinterne Ermittlungen, Datenschutz-, Geldwäsche- und Gesellschaftsrecht spezialisiert. Er hat darüber hinaus Erfahrungen in den Bereichen Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity, Bank- und Kapitalmarktrecht.
Dr. Popp arbeitet seit 2011 bei Debevoise. Dr. Popp arbeitete von 2004 bis 2009 als Rechtsanwaltsanwärter und Rechtsanwalt bei namhaften österreichischen Kanzleien in Wien. Von 1998 bis 2004 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Zivilgerichtliches Verfahren und am Institut für Römisches Recht und Antike Rechtsgeschichte an der Universität Wien. Darüber hinaus war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Europäischen Zentrum für Schadenersatz- und Versicherungsrecht und der Österreichischen Bankwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft.
Dr. Popp ist regelmäßiger Autor für das jährlich erscheinende Börsen-Zeitung Spezial „Wirtschaftskanzleien“. Er ist Autor des Kapitels zu Deutschland im International Comparative Legal Guide - Corporate Investigations Laws and Regulations (Januar 2024) und des Abschnitts Deutschland in GIR Know-How: Privilege in der Global Investigations Review (Dezember 2023). Unter seinen weiteren jüngeren Veröffentlichungen findet sich auch der Beitrag „Eight GDPR Questions when Adopting Generative AI“, erschienen in NYU Compliance & Enforcement (Oktober 2023).
Dr. Popp studierte und promovierte an der Universität Wien. Im Jahr 2010 erwarb er den akademischen Grad LL.M. an der University of Virginia School of Law.
Seine Muttersprache ist Deutsch, darüber hinaus spricht er fließend Englisch.
