Hiroko Yamamoto is an associate in the Litigation Department and a member of the International Dispute Resolution Group. She has advised clients across a range of industries on international dispute resolution matters, including international commercial and treaty arbitration, enforcement of arbitral awards and foreign judgments, and transnational litigation in U.S. courts.
Ms. Yamamoto joined Debevoise in 2021. From 2018 to 2021, she worked as a litigation associate in another international law firm in New York. Ms. Yamamoto received a J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2018, where she was the recipient of several Dean’s Scholar Prizes and the Dean’s Award for Community Leadership. While at Harvard Law School, Ms. Yamamoto served as co-editor-in-chief of the Harvard International Law Journal and president of the Harvard International Arbitration Law Students Association, where she co-founded the International Arbitration Workshop. She was also a Salzburg Cutler Fellow and Student Fellow of the Project on the Foundations of Private Law. She received an LL.B. takuetsu (with highest honors) from the University of Tokyo in 2015.
Ms. Yamamoto is the co-author or author of several articles, including “Enforcing Foreign Arbitral Awards as Foreign Judgments in the United States,” New York Law Journal (June, 2020); “Book Review: A Guide to the ICDR International Arbitration Rules,” American Review of International Arbitration (2020); “2020 in Review: Reflections on a Year of Steady Progress in East and Central Asia,” Kluwer Arbitration Blog (January, 2021); and “Interviews with Our Editors: In Conversation with Professor Masato Dogauchi, Chief Arbitration and Mediation Officer of the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association,” Kluwer Arbitration Blog (March, 2021).
She has also moderated or spoken at various events, including “Technology and International Arbitration: Revelations from Covid-19” at the Harvard International Arbitration Conference (March 2021); “Initial Steps in Arbitration” at the Harvard International Arbitration Workshop (September 2019); and “Oral Advocacy in International Arbitration” at the Harvard International Arbitration Workshop (November 2018).
Ms. Yamamoto serves as an assistant editor (East and Central Asia) of the Kluwer Arbitration Blog and a vice chair of the International Courts & Judicial Affairs Committee of the ABA Section of International Law.
Ms. Yamamoto is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and is admitted to appear before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She is bilingual in English and Japanese.
