Debevoise & Plimpton special counsel Simon Witney, based in the firms’ London office, has been named by Real Deals magazine amongst private equity’s 20 most influential figures.
The regular list from Real Deals includes GPs, LPs, intermediaries, campaigners and politicians. Mr. Witney is the only private practice lawyer on this year’s list, with the magazine stating that he has a “distinguished pedigree as an adviser to the industry.” It notes that, “unusually for a commercial lawyer, Witney also grapples with legal issues affecting the private equity industry at the highest academic levels. Earlier this year he was awarded a PhD from the law faculty at the London School of Economics, where he also teaches company law.”
Mr. Witney has previously been named to a similar list by Private Equity International, when the magazine named him to its Legal Power 30 in 2013.
Mr. Witney is a regular speaker and commentator on company law, corporate governance and regulatory matters, and has advised private equity clients as well as the UK Government on a wide range of fund and transactional matters over the last two decades. A prominent member of the UK and European private equity communities, Mr. Witney has served in senior positions within the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, Invest Europe, and the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association.
Mr. Witney is part of Debevoise & Plimpton’s Funds/Investment Management Group, which has advised private investment firms on the formation of, and investors on the investment in, private investments funds in all major investment strategies for more than 35 years. It is one of the largest and most diverse practices of its kind in the world. The team has acted on behalf of sponsors and investors in more than 2,000 private investment funds with committed capital of well over $2.5 trillion.
