Honoring his commitment to community service, Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) conducted a spotlight interview with Debevoise associate Thomas Lopez. Actively involved in many of VOLS’ pro bono projects, the piece explores Mr. Lopez’s thoughtful approach to his volunteer efforts and how this work has impacted his legal career.
“I think you have to put yourself in your client’s shoes. You can become a better attorney if you really try to understand things from their perspective,” explains Mr. Lopez, stressing the importance of empathy and community building.
In working with VOLS, Mr. Lopez provides immigrants with access to legal services, from helping young immigrants achieve Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) to aiding families in obtaining their public benefits.
