Debevoise Partner Ina C. Popova has been honored by the American Bar Association as a 2017 On the Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyer. The honor recognizes leading young lawyers nationwide who exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal and community service.
Ms. Popova is recognized within the legal community as one of the top international lawyers of her generation. Admitted to the New York and Paris bars, Ms. Popova actively works in six languages, including Spanish and French. She represents private parties and States in a broad range of international matters, handling arbitration disputes, related court litigation, and public international law issues. Ms. Popova has obtained a number of precedential wins for clients, including what was at the time the largest ICC award ever issued, the first unanimous rejection of an ICSID reconsideration request, and the first ICSID order of provisional measures restraining extradition proceedings.
A testament to her commitment to developing her field as well as her recognition among her peers, Ms. Popova serves in a number of leadership positions in the international legal community. She has served as co-Chair of the American Society of International Law's (ASIL) Annual Meeting, which broke past diversity records under her tenure; a member of the Court of the Casablanca International Mediation and Arbitration Centre (CIMAC); rapporteur for the first ASIL-ICCA Joint Task Force on Issue Conflicts in Investor-State Arbitration; and a member of the Program Committee for the ICCA Congress 2018. Ms. Popova speaks and writes regularly on arbitration and international law-related issues. She has taught law at the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and is a Fellow of the Société de Législation Comparée.
Ms. Popova also maintains an active pro bono practice, most recently involving clemency, consular rights, asylum, and the rights of human rights defenders.
