In July, 2025, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP hosted an informal discussion in London with Michael Calvey, a legendary investor in emerging markets and author of Odyssey Moscow.

The event saw Mr. Calvey interviewed by award winning journalist, broadcaster and PR firm founder of Thirty Three Communications, Ryan Chilcote.

Michael Calvey was one of Russia’s most prominent investors, but was arrested in Moscow in 2019 and sent to the Matrosskaya Tishina prison on embezzlement charges based on claims by business rivals.

In his book, Mr. Calvey explores what followed, and how Russia’s era of hope and aspiration turned sour.
