Debevoise Strengthens Shanghai Team

13 January 2015
Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced it has expanded its Asia disputes practice and Shanghai office through the relocation of counsel Philip Rohlik to Shanghai. The move coincides with the firm relocating to its new office in the city.

Mr. Rohlik makes the move from Debevoise’s Hong Kong office, where he helped to expand the firm’s Asian dispute practice in 2011. Prior to that, Mr. Rohlik spent more than a decade in Debevoise’s New York office.

Mr. Rohlik’s practice focuses on international investigations, securities law and dispute resolution. Mr. Rohlik also regularly counsels corporate clients on regulatory issues arising in the course of their business around the globe or in connection with M&A transactions. Over the course of his career, he has developed substantial experience leading matters in China and throughout Asia.

The relocation and office move are the latest steps by Debevoise as it continues to grow in the region. The firm made major hires in Asia in 2014, welcoming Stuart Valentine (one of Asia’s most prominent insurance lawyers), hiring Andy Y. Soh (previously General Electric’s Executive Counsel for Asia-Pacific Litigation and Investigations), and also announcing in December that Mark Johnson, one of the region’s most respected and experienced litigators, is set to join the Hong Kong office.

Lord Goldsmith QC, Chair of European and Asian Litigation at Debevoise, commented: “Debevoise is in Asia for the long term. We’ve had people on the ground in Asia for more than twenty years. It’s a market we’re committed to, and the major hires we’ve made in recent years are testament to that. Since his move to Hong Kong in 2011, and even before that, Philip has been one of the key talents in our Asia practice. For decades the firm has handled disputes, investigations and regulatory matters relating to Asia. With the expansion of our regulatory practice in Hong Kong and the addition of an on the ground litigation practice in China, we look forward to continuing to serve our clients in Asia.”

Philip Rohlik, counsel at Debevoise, commented: “Our Hong Kong office has spearheaded much of our success in Asia in recent years, but the Shanghai office has also played a pivotal role. It works alongside the teams in Hong Kong and the firm’s other offices in many of our biggest matters. I have been working closely with the Shanghai office since long before moving to Hong Kong and I’m looking forward to working even more closely with the team from our new premises in one of the world’s most fascinating cities, and continuing to build our disputes practice in China and Asia.”
