As Featured in The American Lawyer: “Debevoise Faced a Demand Crisis. Its Solution Required Change From the Ground Up.”

7 July 2021

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP was profiled in a four page article in The American Lawyer. This feature article, which includes quotes from several partners, highlights the progress Debevoise has made in recent years, how the partnership came together to make difficult changes that were necessary in an evolving market, and the role of the firm’s lockstep system in making that effort successful. It also captures the firm’s commitment to the distinctive elements of its culture.

Among the many achievements highlighted in the article, which takes the reader from 2012 to the present, are three of note: the launch and growth of Debevoise’s Healthcare & Life Sciences Group, the impact of its Global Talent Initiative and the opening of the firm's San Francisco Office.

At the close of the article, Presiding Partner Michael Blair reflects on the importance of taking care to preserve the firm’s culture even while making the changes needed to achieve long-term growth:

“We effected these changes and really significantly changed the business performance of our firm without eroding the culture at all,” he says. “[Debevoise] is just an incredibly important thing in my life, and I’m a true believer in the Debevoise culture. And the fact that we were able to successfully meet this challenge while actually improving the culture, that’s the thing that’s most important to me.”
