Scott Morrison is a litigation associate (solicitor and barrister). He is a member of the Litigation Department and International Dispute Resolution Group. Dr. Morrison represents individual and corporate clients across the firm’s litigation and international arbitration practices. He has experience of matters in the English High Court, and in commercial arbitration - and under ICC, ICSID, and LCIA rules. He is an active member of the Public International Law Group. In the course of his training contract at Debevoise (2021-2023) he also gained transactional experience – in the Finance Group where he acted for corporate borrowers and financial institution lenders, and in the Tax Department where he assisted in advising on individual taxes and the tax aspects of private equity and other fund structures. Before joining Debevoise, Dr. Morrison was a professor of international politics and an academic lawyer. In 2012, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales (Gray’s Inn). Academic appointments included Academic Visitor at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge; Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand); Visiting Associate Professor at Keio University Law School in Tokyo; Muhammad bin Ladin Fellow at the University of Oxford; Doctoral and Faculty Fulbright Scholar (in Türkiye and the Republic of the Maldives respectively); and Presidential Fellow, Preceptor, Andrew W. Mellon Fellow (in the Society of Fellows) and Visiting Assistant Professor at Columbia University in New York City. During his academic career, Dr. Morrison sole authored two monographs and over sixty journal articles, book chapters and other publications. Law journal articles appeared in Trusts and Trustees, Journal of International Banking Law and Regulation, Harvard Asia Quarterly, Commonwealth Law Bulletin, Journal of Politics and Law, Arab Law Quarterly, and International Company and Commercial Law Review. Case notes and book reviews appeared in The Oxford Journal of Law and Religion and The Cambridge Law Journal. Articles for legal practitioners appeared in Thomson Reuters Legal Solutions, Practical Law Magazine, and Counsel. As a professor, Dr. Morrison delivered complete graduate and post-graduate lecture courses and seminars in several social science and humanities disciplines in New York City - at Hunter College, New York University and Columbia University. He gave invited lectures at the University of Cambridge Centre for Private Law, Georgetown University, Hokkaido University (Sapporo), Université Paris Nanterre, and on the international law of cultural property at the UNESCO meeting “Supporting Documentary Heritage Preservation” in Doha, Qatar. Panel presentations included conferences at the University of Otago (NZ), Kyoto University, Kyushu University, the American University of Beirut, the University of Sevilla and SOAS - University of London. Dr. Morrison delivered the inaugural Diplomatic Academy course (International Relations) to Ministry of Foreign Affairs officers in an Arab state. In Japan he developed (with an industry professional) a doctoral course on energy law and delivered a graduate course on public international law. In Britain, where he became a naturalised citizen (dual national with the U.S., and overseas citizen of India), Dr. Morrison taught LLB, GDL and LLM courses including equity and trusts; commercial, contract and company law; international sale of goods; intellectual property law; investment law; banking and financial law; commercial litigation, arbitration and private international law.
