James Amler is a counsel in the firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Group, Investment Management Litigation Group and FinTech Group. Mr. Amler’s practice focuses on government and internal investigations, securities enforcement defense and regulatory compliance matters, particularly for investment advisers and sponsors of mutual funds and private equity funds.

Mr. Amler has extensive experience advising asset managers, investment advisers, insurance companies, publicly-traded companies and senior executives in complex federal and state regulatory and compliance matters, including relating to FinTech applications. Mr. Amler also has broad commercial litigation experience representing financial services companies in federal and state courts, including in securities litigation, shareholder actions and class actions.

Mr. Amler received his J.D. cum laude from University of Michigan Law School, where he was a Clarence Darrow Scholar and served as executive articles editor of the Michigan Journal of International Law. He received his B.A. in International Studies from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a minor in Chemistry.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Amler worked at Insight Partners in New York in financial analysis and reporting.

Mr. Amler maintains an active pro bono practice, including work with the ACLU, Amnesty International, the Immigrant and Refugee Justice Program of the City Bar Justice Center, Independent Diplomat, NYU Law School’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law, and the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment, as well as with families of children with disabilities. He was one of the principle drafters of the widely-acclaimed report of the International Bar Association’s Presidential Task Force on Climate Change Justice and Human Rights: “Achieving Justice and Human Rights in an Era of Climate Disruption.”

Mr. Amler joined the firm in 2007 and was admitted to the bar in New York in 2008. He is admitted to practice in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Mr. Amler is a member of the Science & Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association.
