Matthew J. Sorensen is a counsel in the Litigation Department and a member of the Liability Management & Special Situations, Bankruptcy Litigation, and Investment Management Litigation Groups. Mr. Sorensen’s practice focuses on bankruptcy and restructuring litigation, corporate governance and investment management disputes, and other high stakes complex litigation for clients in asset management, insurance, life sciences, and technology industries. Mr. Sorensen has represented sponsors, founders, and principal equityholders in litigations concerning distressed investments in the supply-chain finance, renewable energy, personal care, insurance, and commercial real estate sectors. His experience includes litigation relating to out-of-court financing and restructuring transactions, clawback claims arising out of domestic and international insolvencies, post-bankruptcy litigation trustee claims, and debtor and creditor representations. He also regularly advises sponsors, other investors, and third party advisors with respect to transactions involving distress or potential distress situations.

Mr. Sorensen joined Debevoise in 2017. From 2016 to 2017, he clerked for the Hon. Denny Chin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Mr. Sorensen received his J.D. magna cum laude from Fordham University School of Law in 2015, where he was senior articles editor of the Fordham Law Review. He received an A.B. with honors from the University of Chicago in 2006.

Mr. Sorensen is also the author of “Enforcement of Forum-Selection Clauses in Federal Court after Atlantic Marine,” 82 Fordham L. Rev. 2521 (2014), which has been cited by numerous state and federal courts, including the Fifth Circuit.
