Debevoise & Plimpton LLP has received the Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) 2023 Justice Award at the GOSO Gala 2023. The firm was recognized for its outstanding pro bono work including representing Shamel Capers in overturning his wrongful conviction for second degree murder and for winning an acquittal and release for Tysheem McGregor, a young man who had been swept up in a gang-related indictment in East Harlem, both of whom are GOSO clients.
Accepting the Award on behalf of the firm at the GOSO Gala 2023 was litigation partner Susan Regan Gittes.
Since 2016, Debevoise has spent more than 850 hours assisting GOSO with corporate governance, employment, real estate and contract matters and an additional 15,000 hours representing Mr. Capers and Mr. McGregor in criminal trials, appeals, and civil rights litigation. Partner Simone Hicks and counsel Sarah Wolf are on the board of the organization. GOSO partners with people impacted by arrest and incarceration on a journey of education, employment and emotional wellbeing and collaborates with NYC communities to support a culture of nonviolence.
