Nick Kaluk is a partner in the firm’s Restructuring Group and Liability Management & Special Situations team. Mr. Kaluk regularly advises debtors, investors and other creditors in Chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. He also represents investment banks and financial advisors retained by major constituencies in Chapter 11 proceedings and has experience with insurance insolvencies, securitizations and structured financings. In 2022, Mr. Kaluk was part of a Debevoise team awarded The M&A Advisor’s Restructuring Community Impact Award and Restructuring Deal of the Year Award (Over $5B) for its representation of Philippine Airlines in its Chapter 11 pre-arranged plan of reorganization. Additionally, in 2021, he was part of a Debevoise team awarded The M&A Advisor’s Distressed Deal of the Year ($500mm - $1B) for its representation of High Ridge Brands in its Section 363 asset sale and Chapter 11 plan of liquidation. Mr. Kaluk is recommended by The Legal 500 US (2022) and listed as a Rising Star for Restructuring & Insolvency by IFLR1000 (2024). He was a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s 40 Under 40 List for 2022 and was a participant in the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges’ 2023 Next Generation program.
Mr. Kaluk joined Debevoise in 2012 after a clerkship with the Hon. Allan L. Gropper in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. He received a J.D. magna cum laude in 2011 from Brooklyn Law School, where he was a member of the Brooklyn Law Review and a fellow in the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law. He received a B.A. from Columbia University in 2005.
Mr. Kaluk teaches a contract drafting seminar at Cardozo School of Law and has guest lectured at Columbia Law School, Columbia Business School and Brooklyn Law School. Mr Kaluk serves on the Junior Advisory Board of Her Justice and is a former coordinator for the Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) program in New York City. He is also a contributor to the Collier Business Workout Guide and the Debevoise & Plimpton Private Equity Report.
