Sam Newman is a corporate partner in the firm’s Restructuring Group. His practice focuses on representing companies and their owners in Chapter 11 cases as well as in out-of-court restructurings. He also advises technology, healthcare, life sciences, real estate and hospitality clients in a wide range of transactions involving distressed assets.
Mr. Newman has been recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA for Bankruptcy/Restructuring in California for seventeen consecutive years (2009 – 2025). Clients have said he is “both a technical expert and a trusted thought partner. He has a strong command of the facts and a deep understanding of all the legal scenarios that can unfold in a bankruptcy case” (2025). They have also said that he is “by far the most responsive and thoughtful outside counsel we’ve ever had” and praised him as a “skilled deal lawyer who is able to develop a strategy that resolves complex disputes and achieves maximum value for his clients” (2025).
Mr. Newman presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the National Council of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee. He is also a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy.
Mr. Newman joined the firm in 2026 from a leading international law firm. Previously, he held political and fundraising positions with the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C. and served in legislative and policy positions for Senator John Glenn (OH) and Representatives Gary Ackerman (NY) and Rob Andrews (NJ).
He received his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2001 and his B.S. from Georgetown University in 1992.
