Experience

- An independent hydrocarbons company in a contract-based ICC arbitration against a Latin American state relating to the termination of a local-law governed contract for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons.
- The Mexican subsidiary of a global energy company in an ICC arbitration arising out of contractual disputes related to the termination of two long-term gas transportation contracts. We obtained a fully favorable award of over US$125 million in compensation and 80% of the arbitration costs and legal fees.
- YPF S.A. in successfully defeating claims for roughly $15 billion in damages and pre-judgment interest that were brought by Petersen Energía and Eton Park (both funded by Burford Capital) in the S.D.N.Y. arising from the Republic of Argentina’s intervention in YPF and subsequent expropriation of 51% of YPF’s capital stock.
- A U.S. investor in an oil & gas project, including a refinery, oil fields, and licenses, in an ICSID arbitration against the Republic of Peru.
- An engineering and commissioning contractor in a multibillion dollar ICC arbitration seated in Singapore concerning the disputed termination of an EPC subcontract to build and commission a combined-cycle power plant at an Australian LNG facility.
- An international mining company in an advisory matter concerning the company’s treaty rights in response to potential changes to legislation and regulations of a Latin American state.

Sol Czerwonko is a litigation senior associate in the firm’s New York office who focuses her practice on international arbitration and cross-border litigation. She is a member of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution and Latin America Practice Groups. Ms. Czerwonko’s recent representations include complex disputes involving international investment treaties, shareholder disputes, as well as energy and infrastructure projects. She has experience advising clients across multiple jurisdictions and representing parties in arbitrations under the auspices of the ICSID and ICC. In addition, Ms. Czerwonko has experience in litigation in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In 2024, the American Bar Association granted Ms. Czerwonko the “On The Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyers” award, which recognizes attorneys across the United States who exemplify a broad range of high achievement, leadership and service to the legal profession. Moreover, Who’s Who Legal recognized Ms. Czerwonko as a Future Leader in international arbitration in 2024 and 2025. The Legal 500 (2025) client testimonials have described Ms. Czerwonko as “extremely talented and a rising star.” Notably, Ms. Czerwonko is part of the Debevoise team that recently won summary judgment on behalf of YPF, the largest energy producer in the Republic of Argentina, defeating claims for roughly $15 billion in damages and prejudgment interest. This was a landmark win for YPF, securing dismissal of a case that has been pending in the U.S. District Court since 2015.She has an active pro bono practice focused on helping individuals from underserved Latin American communities in the United States. In recognition of her outstanding pro bono work, Ms. Czerwonko received Her Justice’s 2023 Commitment to Justice Award.Ms. Czerwonko is an LL.M. graduate of New York University School of Law, where she was awarded the Dean’s Graduate Award, a merit-based tuition award granted to master students who demonstrated significant academic promise and achievement. Ms. Czerwonko received her J.D. from Austral University in Argentina, where she was the youngest graduate in her class and obtained the highest GPA achieved by any law student in almost a decade. She was also the recipient of the Gold Medal Award, the Excellence in Private Law Award, and the Best Research Paper Award. In addition, the Bar Association of the City of Buenos Aires awarded Ms. Czerwonko the Academic Excellence in Legal Studies Award and she was selected by Santander Rio Bank to receive the Academic Merit Award. Ms. Czerwonko is regularly invited as guest lecturer at NYU Law School and frequently speaks at international arbitration conferences in the United States and Latin America, including at the American Bar Association Annual Conference and the Harvard Law School Annual International Arbitration Conference.Ms. Czerwonko is admitted to practice law in New York and Argentina. She is also admitted to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She is a native Spanish speaker and fluent in English. She is a member of the ABA, NYSBA, Young ITA and Young ICC. She serves as Group Advisor in the 10th cycle (2023-2024) of the Young International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Mentoring Program.
