Experience
Kevin Schmidt is a corporate partner and a member of Debevoise’s Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity and Media & Telecommunications Groups. He has worked extensively on acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures, including cross-border transactions for both private equity and corporate clients. These matters include transactions in which intellectual property is a critical aspect of the deal, including the reacquisition of The Jim Henson Company and the subsequent sale of the Muppets characters to The Walt Disney Company. Mr. Schmidt is recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA (2010) and Chambers Global (2010) for mergers and acquisitions in the private equity and media sectors. He is also recommended by The Legal 500 US (2010) for transactions involving telecom and broadcast media.
Mr. Schmidt has spoken at a variety of seminars regarding recurring M&A issues. He is a contributing author of The Private Equity Primer: The Best of the Debevoise & Plimpton Private Equity Report and the Debevoise & Plimpton Private Equity Report. He is also the author of “Defining the Terms," The Deal (2008), "Big Game Hunting,” The Deal (2007) and “Navigating Conflicts on Boards of Portfolio Companies,” The Corporate Governance Advisor (2006). Mr. Schmidt is a member of the board of directors of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, which provides pro bono legal representation and other services to the arts community.
Mr. Schmidt joined Debevoise in 1994 and became a partner in 2002. He received his J.D. with high honors from Rutgers School of Law in 1994, where he was Order of the Coif, and his B.A. summa cum laude from Jersey City State College in 1989.
