Pierre Maugüé is a corporate partner, Chair of the Structured Finance practice and a member of the firm’s Finance Group. Mr. Maugüé focuses his practice on acquisition and leveraged buyout financings and structured financings. Mr. Maugüé has been recommended by The Legal 500 UK every year since relocating to London and was previously recommended in The Legal 500 US. The guide has described him as “very commercial,” “rock solid,” “sharp, helpful and very user-friendly,” and “technically very strong.” Mr. Maugüé is also recommended by Chambers UK (2026), where he is noted as a “first-class banking lawyer who consistently provides excellent, user-friendly advice to clients on the most complex transactions.”
Mr. Maugüé brings a global perspective to his work, having lived and worked in Asia, Europe and the United States. He joined Debevoise in 1999 in the firm’s Hong Kong office. He relocated to the New York office in 2002 before moving to London in 2014. Prior to joining Debevoise, Mr. Maugüé worked for three years with the New York office of a leading international law firm where he focused on international taxation. He also worked as a French attorney in Paris in 1993 and 1994. Mr. Maugüé received a Magistère and DESS in Business and Tax Law, with high honours, from the University of Paris II-ASSAS in 1991, and a Master of Laws in Comparative Jurisprudence from New York University in 1995.
Mr. Maugüé writes frequently on legal matters related to finance topics and is also a regular contributor to the Debevoise & Plimpton Private Equity Report.
Mr. Maugüé was admitted to the New York Bar in 1996 and as a solicitor in England & Wales in 2016.
