During summer orientation, we will introduce you to the firm – to Debevoise partners and associates, your fellow summer associates, and the practice of law. Summer associates have opportunities to bond with their class during orientation activities and ask questions at panel discussions. Firm leaders will also share how the firm’s values are embodied in how we serve our clients and work with each other. Orientation offers exposure to our diversity and pro bono programs and information about the opportunities for summer associates to get involved.
The summer experience is meant to be fun and engaging, in addition to providing a challenging learning experience. Organized social events introduce summer associates to New York, to each other and to lawyers within the firm. These include dinners hosted by partners in their homes, sporting and cultural events, and pro bono benefits and activities. In 2016, for example, summer associates attended associate receptions, our annual event at the Central Park Zoo, Shakespeare in the Park, bowling events, and cooking classes. They also had the opportunity to organize two events of their own choosing.
In 2016, more than 95% of Debevoise summer associates worked on pro bono assignments, many of which provided drafting and client counseling experience. Summer associates can participate in a wide variety of challenging and high-impact pro bono matters with leading legal service organizations such as The Legal Aid Society, Human Rights First, Immigration Equality and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest Inc., among others. Opportunities include corporate projects for not-for-profit organizations, stand-up experience in family law and disability matters, research and writing on international human rights issues, civil rights litigation, and representations of low-income individuals.
